The first Sunday of Advent is approaching, and it’s time to light the candles in a cozy Advent decoration. However, not everyone has the skill to quickly craft a perfect Advent wreath from some spruce branches.

Luckily, there are alternatives to wire, holly, and frustration. You can quickly and easily create a beautiful Advent decoration without being an expert at wreath making!

But first, let’s take a look at the lovely tradition of lighting four candles during Advent!

What is Advent, and Why Do We Celebrate It?

Advent refers to the four Sundays leading up to Christmas. The word comes from the Latin “Adventus Domini,” meaning “The Lord’s Arrival,” referring to the birth of Jesus.

Advent is a period of anticipation and preparation for one of the most significant Christian holidays. While Christmas is important, Easter, celebrating Jesus’ resurrection, remains the most important holiday in Christianity.

The first Sunday of Advent marks the start of the new church year. Hence, the hymn “Welcome, the Lord’s Year” is often included in the church service on this day.

Christmas – the Festival of Light

The way we celebrate Advent today, by lighting four candles in a wreath, is a relatively new tradition. The custom of placing the candles in a wreath originated in Germany and spread out to Scandinavia in the early 1900s. Advent wreaths became truly popular during the 1930s and 1940s, with the candles symbolizing hope and light in the darkness.

The tradition of lighting candles during the dark season dates back to pre-Christian times, when people celebrated “jól,” a festival marking the return of the light. The winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, often falls around December 21, which could explain why the Nordic jól celebration merged with the celebration of Jesus’ birth. It’s clear that light has always held special significance during the darkest time of the year.

Tips for a Quick and Simple Advent Wreath

An Advent wreath can take many forms, but the four candles are always central. With a beautiful tray, you can create a simple version with four pillar candles or use an Advent candle holder designed for four candles.

During a forest walk, you might find cones, moss, and pretty berries to decorate your Advent wreath. Or why not make an edible Christmas decoration with nuts and candy? For this purpose, beautiful trays and candle holders that include space for treats are excellent alternatives to the classic Advent wreath.

Create an Advent Wreath with What You Have at Home

You can easily make an Advent wreath with items you already have at home. You can use four plain white candles in holders without decoration or embellish with braided stars, Christmas baubles, or perhaps a small Bambi figurine.

A Sweet and Unique Advent Calendar

If you’re running late with your Advent wreath, you can quickly print and assemble the four Christmas houses in a sweet and unique Advent calendar. The houses are numbered 1-4, and inside, you can place an LED tea light.

Templates for this lovely Advent decoration can be printed on A4 paper, and it’s a fun little project to cut out and assemble the houses. They look beautiful in the window, and on weekdays, you can turn the houses around so the numbers are hidden, letting the light shine through the small windows.
