Raclette brunch is a fun way to bring new life to the Raclette grill which since forever has been collecting dust in the cupboard. The Raclette Grill had its golden days in the 1980s and 1990s, where everything from canned cocktail sausages to cheese covered tomatoes had to be prepared on the fancy table grill. Since then, it, much like the fondue pot, has become a regular in many flea markets – and what a shame.

Now is the time to bring back the Raclette Grill to the dinner party table! The Raclette indeed provides a wonderful opportunity for a relaxed get-together with friends. With a Raclette Grill, no one has to stay the kitchen, and both the hostess and guests can just relax and enjoy themselves. And if you want to try something other than the traditional brunch, invite your friends to a retro brunch with the Raclette as the center piece.

Raclette – both a cheese and a grill

A Raclette is a small, electric table grill, where you enjoy frying and grilling your own food. The top of the grill is a large pan for frying mini steaks, mushrooms or sausages. The smaller pans below invite for vegetables with melted cheese or maybe a small omelet.

Traditionally, a Raclette cheese from the mountain area between Switzerland and France has been used for melting. Raclette is thus both the name of the cheese and the grill, but in French it is also a verb meaning “to scrape”. The cheese was slowly heated over a fire before the melting side was scraped over a piece of bread, ham, vegetables, etc. In the same way, you can use the small pans to melt the cheese before pouring it over the food.

What should you serve for raclette brunch?

For a brunch where the Raclette has its natural place in the center of the table the guests are able to make hot brunch dishes themselves. In addition to the traditional accompaniment to a brunch, you can also let melted cheese and grilled meat be a large part of the meal. Place a lot of small bowls on the table with the things that are well suited for a Raclette, for example:

  • Cheese – of course! It does not have to be a Raclette cheese if you can’t get your hands on it. All cheese that melts easily – Mozzarella, Gruyere or Emmentaler, – can be used
  • Bacon, sausages and small steaks
  • Asparagus in smaller pieces
  • Pancake dough and egg mass in jugs, enabling the guests to make pancakes and omelette in the small pans
  • Small tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms and onions in boats – off course with lots of cheese on top!
  • Pieces of unpeeled bananas grilled with Nutella
  • Goat cheese and small pieces of pear
  • Pre-fried or pre-cooked potatoes
  • Slices of plums or peaches served with whipped cream

For all the delicious brunch dishes, also serve bread and butter, syrup, jam, ketchup and mustard. And do remember to put salt, pepper and spices on the table.
