A wonderful drink for a hot summer day
Caipirinha (pronounced kah-puh-rin-jaa) is Brazil’s national drink. Where some might prefer the slightly milder Mojito, which contains sparkling water, the South Americans prefer this very simple cocktail. In a Caipirinha there are only three ingredients and then lots of crushed ice. No mint, no bubbles to wash out the cocktail, only ice that slowly melts into the tasty mixture of sugar, lime and cachaça. Originally made with fermented sugar cane juice, cachaça is a spirit similar to rum.
Recipe for Caipirinha
A Caipirinha does not require any fancy bartender skills, although it is important that you serve it with cachaça, or if not in your home bar, a white rum. Feel free to add more sugar to taste. Do choose an organic lime so not to get residues of pesticides into your drinking glass.
- ½ lime in boats
- 1-2 teaspoons cane sugar
- 4 cl cachaça
- Crushed ice
- A short straw
- 1 slice of lime for garnish
How to make a Caipirinha
1. Cut the lime into boats and put them in a small drinking glass together with cane sugar.
2. Use a muddler or a fork to squeeze the juice out of the lime and mix it with the sugar.
3. Fill the glass with crushed ice.
4. Pour cachaça over.
5. Garnish with a slice of lime.
